When we say secular...

The adjective “secular” comes from the Latin word sauculum, which means “time” or “age”. “To call someone secular means he is completely time-bound, totally a child of his age, a creature of history, with no vision of eternity. Unable to see anything in the perspective of eternity, he cannot believe that God exists or acts in human affairs.” (James Hitchock, What Is Secular Humanism)

-Gary Demar, God and Government

And to think that we live in a widely secular culture; that the popular dress, entertainment, news sources, etc. in our nation is secular. “… with no vision of eternity.” Does it scare you to think that a good portion of those contributing to the habits and concerns of our culture care only for the pleasures of here and now? One’s level of morality and concern for others is changed drastically when there is no hope for tomorrow.

For the secularist, there is no God. Thus there is no hope or faith in anything but ourselves, and any pleasure to be had in this world must be snatched quickly away before others can rob us of it. This is the thinking the promotes sexually transmitted diseases, abortion, homosexuality, rape, murder, and a multitude of other problems that stem forth from an atheist’s view of pleasure.

"By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God, than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin; considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt." –Hebrews 11.24-26

And so we, as sons and daughters of the King, must be ready to turn away from the fleeting pleasures of this world, in order to store up everlasting treasures in heaven. All May we strive to use our freedom in this country to the advancement of His kingdom.

Thou wilt make known to me the path of life; in Thy presence is fullness of joy; in Thy right hand there are pleasures forever. -Psalm 16.11

All glory to God!

Interesting...I am a secularist. I do not believe in God. But guess what? I sure don't promote or support or believe in promoting sexually transmitted disease, rape, or murder. As far as homosexuality goes - that's something i don't understand, but cannot condemn - as I do not believe in condeming my fellow man for loving a person. And as far as abortion, that is a medical decision between a woman and her family and her doctor. While it is something i may personally disagree with, who am I to judge another human's actions?

You make some pretty broad and offensive statements. Simply because a person does not believe in God, or YOUR VERSION of Christianity, DOES NOT mean they promote the ills of society as you suggest.

Enjoy being 16, I guarantee that there will never be another time in your life when you will be so confident in your knowledge of absolutely everything.

Beware of broad condemnations based on narrow definitions you find in books....best of luck to you, Jennifer.

I think Jennifer will always have firm opinions on many subjects, no matter what her age, because of her upbringing; and I don't see that she is so arrogant as to believe that she has knowledge of absolutely everything.

Thanks for sharing, Jen.

Anonymous, I don't believe at any young age we can know everything there is to know about life (even when we’re old we still don’t), but I do believe that even at my young age the truths I've based my life on/ have put my faith in will never change. My God has given me His Word, which tells me what my perspective on, to quote you, "absolutely everything", should be. That doesn't mean I necessarily have the right one, however, because we're all sinners. My God and His word will last me and others from 16 till 96 and even beyond me... through eternity. That is how I can be so confident.

Jennifer,
Paul said to Timothy in Timothy 4:12 “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”
So often today, Christian teens are afraid to speak out for what is right.
When you take a stand for Christ, there will always be ones who think that you are offensive and narrow-minded. Don’t give up, but “stand fast in the faith” (I Corinthians 16:13b).
I am praying for you,
Rose

Hey, that brought about a new angle on the word 'secular' for me!

Excellent post, Jennifer. Standing up for absolute truth in today's world is not always easy. There are always those who will misunderstand, misinterpet or reject the truth. Thank you for taking a stand. God Bless.
