Women I Admire: Part 1

Mrs. Carr
Oakland, Nebraska

Mrs. Carr lives only half a mile down the road from our home, and is one of my mom’s closest friends. She lives with her husband, two sons, and one adopted daughter. She has been a friend and mentor to my mother, and a wonderful example for me. Thus, I consider her as one of the women I greatly admire. Why?

She is always serving others

Anyone who knows Mrs. Carr will agree that she is always busy! Whether cooking food for community events, helping out with church activities or spending time blessing friends with her words, she is always giving her precious time to others. This is something that so many people, including myself, need to slow down and attempt to emulate. While I find it hard to keep up with activities that serve my own purposes, Mrs. Carr seems to have difficulty keeping up with activities that serve others! She is a wonderful image of a woman who considers others before herself, and thus she is a servant.

She listens to others

Like my own mother, Mrs. Carr is a good listener. Whenever my mom is having a hard time, Mrs. Carr is always there to simply listen; a comforting trait that is hard for anyone to master! You know you have a true friend when you can go to her or him about anything, and not attempt to cover it up. Not only is it a great comfort for mom to let someone know what she is going through, but also to have the assurance that Mrs. Carr will be praying for and supporting her. Mrs. Carr is also a listener.

She talks with teens

Though most home-schooled parents seem to talk well and on issues with depth to teens, I feel that Mrs. Carr really treats me as an adult and takes my words seriously, and this is something any teen can greatly appreciate! She makes an effort to be involved with her children’s lives and their friends, and this shows her well-rounded efforts in communicating with people of all ages. Mrs. Carr is a communicator.

She pursues womanly hobbies in the home as well as outside the home

Mrs. Carr has her own small home business, where she makes baked goods and sells them at our local farmers market. She also sews and gardens, and schools her three children. She is a wonderful image of the Proverbs 31 woman, who "seeks wool and flax, and willingly works with her hands". Besides maintaining her home well and serving her family, she is active in church and community activities. She is well known in our area as a woman you can count on for ministering or serving! Mrs. Carr is a homemaker.

And above all, she possesses a gentle, kind, Godly attitude and character

Though Mrs. Carr is viewed by my family as a saint, I know that even she has days when work and ministering can take a toll on attitude. But, a very important key is that she knows how to humble herself, repent, apologize and learn from her own sinfulness. And through any struggles in her life, my neighbor has developed a womanly strength, and feminine gentleness. She is truly a woman of character and Godliness, and I am thankful to have such a wonderful woman as an example in my life.

Proverbs 31: 10

Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.
